The Perfume River

Known as the Huong river by the locals of Hue, the name has significance. At 30km long, this river passes through some wonderful landscapes of mountain ranges, scented plants and other spectacular landscape before reaching Hue. It is said that the river picks up the scent surrounding the terrains it flows through and then releases the aroma throughout the city. In Autumn, it is especially perfumed as the scent accelerates in flavour during the Fall.

The river has a place where the aquatic flow is originally from. It begins in the Truong Dong mountain range. The river passes through various plains, islets and villages landscapes before resting at the Tam Giang Lagoon. It is known to take all fragrances from the areas it passes through on the way to Hue. The locals savour the aroma at the riverside. Any visitors can do the same while in Hue.

The scent is everywhere, ranging from the Imperial Grounds to the Tombs of Emperors and across the areas of the city which the river flows through. Although not as prominent now due to modernisation of Hue, it is still in the air and at its most fragrant in September and October.

There are a variety of cafes and restaurants at the riverside to take in some beautiful views of the river. Sunset is one of the best times to take pictures. Artists can be seen at the riverside from time to time getting a handmade visual of the scenery. Boat trips along the river can take visitors to various landmarks in Hue, such as the Imperial Enclosure, Thien Mu Pagoda and the Tomb of Emperor Minh Hang.

The weather is suitable to stroll along the river all year round. Visitors who wish to take in the full floral aroma of the river are suggested to visit in the Autumn. Anyone paying a visit to Hue should take a stroll along the perfume river.
