4. Rex Hotel
The Rex Hotel has a special place in Saigon’s history. Constructed in 1927, it started out as a two-story auto dealership and garage complex. From 1959 to 1975, it was transformed into a 100-room hotel, which featured three cinemas, a dance hall and a library. Newly renovated in 1961, it received its first guests – they were 400 United States Army soldiers.
During the Vietnam War, the hotel was the site of the US military command’s daily press conference, and its rooftop bar was a hangout destination for many of the military officials and war journalists. The daily conference was dubbed as ‘Five O’Clock Follies‘ by derisive journalists but now remains a quirky term for the hotel’s cocktail hour.
The hotel is charming in an old school luxurious way. History buffs stay here for a trip into Ho Chi Minh City’s past. While you are at it, you might also consider paying a visit to the War Remnants Museum, while not exactly a fun trip, it is definitely educational and will help you understand the history of Vietnam.
Looking for a Boutique Hotel in Town?
With Ho Chi Minh City booming, there seems to be a new boutique hotel sprouting up in every corner of Saigon. Here are our top three picks that we would rank among the best hotels in Ho Chi Minh City.
5. Mia Saigon
The Mia Saigon calls itself ‘a private urban sanctuary where space, style and luxury meet, set on the banks of the tranquil Saigon River’.
Hidden away in a quiet corner of District 2, ironically Mia Saigon’s advantage is actually that it is not in a prime location. A stunning white and black building with an incredible outdoor saltwater pool, this place gives you tropical vibes that are hard to find in the bustle of District 1.
Featuring 35 spacious rooms and 17 sumptuous suites, the Mia Saigon is a real gem because all rooms are pool facing. The hotel has plenty of great reviews which highlight the amazing views you will have of the Saigon River and the attentive personal touch of the hotel’s professional staff. Our favourite thing to do is to sip wine while lazing by the pool and watching the sun set over the city’s skyline.
Top tip: If you can, take advantage of the often complimentary shuttle speedboat for an unforgettable ride down Saigon River.
6. Villa Song
Another treasure of a boutique hotel situated along the banks of the gently flowing Saigon River, the Villa Song is a rare heritage gem tucked away in Ho Chi Minh City’s trendy Thao Dien neighbourhood in District 2. A little out of the way from the city centre, Thao Dien is popular with the expat community and is known for it burgeoning art scene, fantastic eateries, and cute boutique shops.
Villa Song is in a great location where you get the best of both worlds – it is a hideaway from the hectic Ho Chi Minh City life, but also incredibly close to some of the best restaurants in town.
As always, we love a good outdoor saltwater pool, and this one is big enough to take in laps. Other travelers have raved about the riverside view from Villa Song’s restaurant. Be sure to book a spot in advance!
7. The Myst Dong Khoi
Now we travel back to the heart of Ho Chi Minh City to the Myst Dong Khoi, a charming boutique hotel that is one of the most unique buildings in town. It features oddly shaped windows and irregular curves, designed by Vietnamese architecture firm A21 studio.
A21 studio’s architect Nguyen Hoa Hiep explains that the structure is ‘a deliberate departure from a typical hotel typology and draws curiosity and a sense of exploration. The hotel’s winding corridors with concrete ceilings and exposed sprinkler pipes are more reminiscent of the Saigon streetscape’.
Dong Khoi is also a good location for shopping. Take some time out of your day to discover up-and-coming brands in Saigon. While you are out and about, be sure to stop by Ben Thanh Market for your dose of Ho Chi Minh City market life. Here is some special Vietnamese gifts you can buy when visiting Saigon.
