We all know someone who hates to try new foods. Admittedly, I have been that person before. For someone just coming to Vietnam there are several dished that judging by just the name would make people feel nauseous. Whenever I have friends come visit its always a battle to get them to try some of the dishes here that I now know are absolutely delicious. Here are a few dishes in Vietnam with unappetizing names, but are 100% worth at least trying!
1. Fish Sauce Chicken wings. (Fish Sauce anything really)
Just saying “Fish Sauce” sounds gross. However, this small chicken wing stand in the Old Quarter of Hanoi has been my go to wing place since I first had them. Fish sauce chicken wings have a salty and savory taste. My friend and I will order round after round…. No ranch or blue cheese needed for these guys! Try them here next time you are in Hanoi!
Name- Vâu Quán
Address- 37 Đào Duy Từ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
2. Egg Coffee
I love coffee, but when I heard of “egg coffee” I didn’t know what to expect. “Do they just shove an egg in coffee and mix it up?” A local friend of mine in Hanoi suggest the famous coffee shop “Cafe Giảng” She told me “Go down the narrow alley. You’ll see an old man with a hat at the register and that’s the place.” I was fascinated with what they brought me. A small cup in a bowl of warm water. A thick sweet creamy egg topping covering the strong coffee below. This drink tasted nothing like what I was expecting. This drink is a must try for someone visiting Hanoi.
Name- Café Giang
Address- 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân, Hàng Bạc, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
3. Trứng vịt lộn (Balut) ((Duck Egg Embryo))
This one is a bit rougher. It took me about 6 months of living in Vietnam to try. I always suggest it to my friends and if they get grossed out I don’t push back too hard to try. I personally was very surprised when I tried this! To me it tasted like the broth of chicken noodle soup. This was much more mind over matter. It was only gross when I thought about it before eating it. As soon as I tried I realized it wasn’t so bad! Definitely worth a try to anyone who has been thinking of trying this dish.
