Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien made history by becoming the first-ever Vietnamese to win the coveted Miss Grand international 2021 title.
On the evening of the 4th of December in Bangkok, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, a 23-year-old Vietnamese beauty queen beat over 60 contestants from all over the world, including heavyweights such as Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Brazil and South Africa, at the pageant’s grand finale.
The theme for this year’s pageant focuses on humanitarian issues and peace, a relevant and timely topic in light of the global pandemic. During the Top 5 interview round, Tien was asked to choose a person with whom to discuss world problems to make a change and she answered with the creator of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine. She mentioned she would like to give thanks to the team for releasing their invention without seeking profits. Her confidence, humanitarian values and eloquence not only led her to become Vietnam’s first-ever Miss Grand International titleholder but also the Vietnam representative with the most proficient English to date.
Throughout the competition, Tien also frequently conversed in Thai instead of English, quickly earning support from a line of growing local fandom. Notably, she ended her speech addressing the importance of peace and sympathy in Thai, which meant "Make the world a better place for everyone.”
Nguyễn Thúc Thủy Tiên was born in 1998. She was enrolled in the French Literature program at the HCMC University of Social Sciences and Humanities after graduating high school but switched to Hoa Sen University to study hotel management and hospitality.
