A woman died from contracting influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu, in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, causing local authorities to place more than 40 people in quarantine to avoid an outbreak.

The patient was named as Nguyen Thi Thom, 37, a Kon Tum Province native, online newspaper VnExpress quoted Monday as saying Nguyen Loc Vuong, director of the Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thom had symptoms for about half a month before she was admitted to the Kon Tum Province General Hospital on November 3, including mild fever, exhaustion, and swallowing disoders.

The patient was verified to have influenza A (H1N1).

Five days later, on November 8, she passed away at the infirmary.

Competent authorities have taken action to prevent a possible epidemic, including quarantining a total of 44 people who have been in contact with the patient recently and are at risk of exposure to the flu.
